The reality is that most Americans today are facing debt. Whether the situation is dire or not, the scary part is that few of us know how to protect ourselves from debt because we were never taught in school. We’ve seen some true horrors working in finances for as long as we have. Unfortunately, even recently this year, we’ve had several cases where spouses have been left devastated by COVID-19. 

Just last week, one such client, who we’ll call Jenny for the sake of keeping her identity protected, told me about her husband, who passed away just nine months ago. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and she was his full-time caregiver at the age of seventy-four. Already, this caused a financial strain on her. Then, he went to the hospital for a urinary tract infection. It should have been a relatively simple hospital visit. But, as is often happening these days, he was diagnosed with COVID-19 shortly after his visit and wound up facing in-patient care. Finally, after twelve days, he was cleared to go home, and he seemed okay. 

Unfortunately, he was not okay. He died a short eight days later. Jenny was devastated.

It cost her twelve grand for a simple, stripped-down funeral. And that was nothing compared to the hospital bills she faced. And we can’t even begin to talk about the emotional burden she was shouldering. Nine months later, she still misses him every single day. 

It’s heartbreaking. It’s a story that has stuck with us. Maybe that’s because our family here at Protect Against Debt is finally feeling the ravaging effects of COVID as well, or perhaps it’s the genuineness with which she spoke. But, whatever the reason it’s stuck in our mind, it’s made these last few paragraphs quite hard just to write.
